The Bing Cherry is the undisputed king of the cherry world. Originating in Oregon in the late 1800s, it remains the most popular commercial sweet cherry for a very good reason: its flavor is perfection. Each large, heart-shaped fruit features a deep, mahogany-red skin that snaps when you bite into it, revealing a firm, purple flesh that is intensely sweet and richly flavored. Whether you are eating them fresh by the handful, baking them into a world-class pie, or preserving them for winter, the Bing sets the bar that all other cherries strive to reach.
In the spring, the Bing tree is a majestic sight, completely draped in a dense canopy of fragrant, snowy-white blossoms that draw pollinators from miles around. It is a vigorous, upright grower that develops into a beautiful, spreading shade tree as it matures. While the Bing is not self-fertile and requires a pollination partner—such as Rainier or Black Tartarian—the massive harvests it produces make it well worth the effort. For the home gardener who wants the "real deal" cherry experience, the Bing is the essential choice.
