If you love the tropical look of a Rose of Sharon but dread pulling up hundreds of baby seedlings every spring, the Petite Pink Flamingo™ is the answer. Developed at Oregon State University, this modern marvel is a "pentaploid"—which is botanical shorthand for being completely sterile and seedless. When grown as a "standard" (trained into a single-trunk tree form), it becomes an elegant, space-saving patio tree that delivers high-impact color without the high-maintenance cleanup.
The blooms are an absolute standout: large, single, vivid pink flowers with a striking dark red "eye" radiating from the center. They begin erupting in mid-summer and continue putting on a show straight through to early autumn. Unlike older hibiscus varieties that often suffer from pale, yellowish leaves in the spring, 'Flamingo' is specifically prized for its rich, deep green foliage that looks vibrant all season long. Because this is naturally a dwarf, compact variety, the canopy on top of the tree trunk stays beautifully tight and rounded, making it an exquisite focal point for a small garden, a sunny courtyard, or flanking a bright entryway.
