The Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) is a large-sized tree native to the west coast of North America from Oregon down to southern California and extending west into Nevada. This tree is a magnificent sight in maturity. It can be found growing in the wild along wooded mountain slopes and canyons. It has a broad, conical form with spreading branches made up of dark green evergreen leaves that give off a woodsy aroma when crushed.
In late summer or early fall (earlier in lower elevations, later in high) the tree produces male and female cones. The small male cones are yellow while the female cones are cylindrical and made up of 6 pointed scales. As the female cones open they resemble a duck’s beak. It also sports brownish-gray and red exfoliating bark that is quite impressive.
The Incense Cedar is a highly versatile tree. It often grows where not many other trees can. From rocky ridges down to bogs, this cedar is able to maintain a healthy appearance. If watered adequately when young, it is also able to develop a tolerance to drought in maturity. It is a great option as a fast and easily grown tree used in a hedge in a garden, yard, or park. It also can be used to create fast-growing forests and takes pruning very well. It does best in partial to full sun and can do well in a range of soil types.
