If you are looking for a tree with a "presence," the Liberty London Planetree is it. A hybrid between the American Sycamore and the Oriental Plane tree, the 'Liberty' cultivar was specifically bred by the U.S. National Arboretum for its superior resistance to anthracnose and powdery mildew—two common issues that often plague other sycamore-style trees. It is a true "legacy" tree, characterized by its massive trunk and a sprawling, majestic canopy that provides deep, cooling shade.
The most striking feature of the Liberty is its exfoliating bark. As the tree grows, the outer bark peels away in large flakes to reveal a creamy-white, olive, and tan "camouflage" pattern underneath, providing incredible visual interest even in the dead of winter. Its leaves are large and maple-like, emerging a bright green before turning a warm yellow-brown in the fall. This tree is nearly bulletproof in urban environments, shrugging off air pollution, compacted soil, and heat with ease. If you have the space for a grand, long-lived shade provider that looks like a work of art, the Liberty is a premier choice.
