The Red Delicious is the quintessential "lunchbox apple." Since its discovery in Iowa in the late 1800s, it has become a staple of American culture. It is instantly recognizable by its tall, heart-like shape and the five distinct "bumps" or lobes on the bottom. The skin is a brilliant, deep crimson that is thick and durable—making it one of the best apples for long-term storage—while the flesh is a creamy white, crisp, and mildly sweet.
In the spring, the tree is a showstopper, covered in a profusion of fragrant, pink-tinged white blossoms that are a magnet for honeybees. As a standard fruit tree, it grows with a strong, upright habit that develops into a broad, rounded canopy over time. While the Red Delicious is not self-fertile and requires a pollination partner like Golden Delicious or Gala to set fruit, its massive yields make it a rewarding choice for the home orchardist. It is best enjoyed fresh off the branch, providing that nostalgic, sweet crunch that has made it a favorite for generations.
