If you love the look of a flowering crabapple but hate the constant chore of pruning "suckers" (those annoying sprouts that grow from the base of the trunk), the Royal Gem sproutfree™ is your dream tree. This dwarf variety has been specifically selected for its clean, upright habit and its refusal to produce messy base growth. It stays naturally small and tidy, making it the perfect choice for small gardens, courtyards, or even as a focal point in a large garden bed.
The Royal Gem is a multi-season showstopper. In early spring, it erupts in a dense cloud of vibrant, rose-red blossoms that are much larger and showier than your average crabapple. As the flowers fade, they are replaced by striking dark-purple foliage that matures to a rich, bronzy green. In the fall, the tree produces a heavy crop of tiny, 1/2-inch dark red fruits. These berries are persistent, meaning they stay on the tree into the winter, providing a vital food source for songbirds and keeping the tree looking decorative long after the leaves have fallen.
