If you need shade yesterday, the Siouxland Poplar is about as close as you can get to instant gratification. Selected by South Dakota State University, this is a male clone of the native Eastern Cottonwood. That distinction is crucial because it means this tree is completely cottonless. You get the colossal size, the rapid growth, and the classic rustling leaves of a cottonwood without the blizzard of white fluff that clogs up window screens and air conditioners.
This tree is a true giant of the plains, built to withstand severe winters and heavy winds, making it an exceptional choice for windbreaks or large properties needing a quick privacy screen. Its foliage is large, triangular, and glossy green, shimmering in the wind with the same soothing sound as an Aspen. In the fall, the leaves turn a golden yellow before dropping. While it thrives in moist soils near water, it is surprisingly adaptable to drier upland sites once established. For homeowners with a big empty lot who want a mature-looking tree in a fraction of the usual time, Siouxland is the answer.
