If you want a tree that looks like a pillar of fire in October, the Tupelo Tower™ Black Gum is your best bet. While the standard Black Gum is known for its wide, erratic spreading habit, this cultivar was specifically selected for its tight, columnar shape. It provides a stately, upright structure that fits perfectly into narrow side yards or serves as a formal vertical accent in larger landscapes.
The standout feature here is the foliage. In the summer, the leaves are a deep, lustrous, "plastic-like" green that resists spotting and pests. When the temperature drops, it puts on a show that rivals any Maple, shifting into brilliant shades of orange and glowing scarlet. It’s also an incredibly tough tree for difficult spots; it’s one of the few species that can handle "wet feet" and heavy clay soil without complaining. Plus, it produces tiny, nectar-rich flowers that are a favorite for honeybees, followed by small blue fruits that local birds will thank you for.
